About Becoming a Member

Eligibility
Membership is open to anyone with a recognized clinical degree or credential in a mental health field, such as:

  • Board-certified psychiatrists or residents specializing in psychiatry
  • Licensed clinical psychologists
  • Licensed clinical social workers
  • Marriage and family therapists
  • Registered nurses specializing in psychiatry

Students in graduate programs that are prerequisites for these licenses are eligible for membership, as are graduates of such programs who are continuing their training in a pre-licensed status (such as interns and psychological assistants).

In addition, persons with demonstrated equivalent clinical experience, or evidence of exceptional ability to contribute to the teaching and/or practice of psychotherapy as evaluated by the Membership Committee, are also eligible for membership in The Psychotherapy Institute.

The Psychotherapy Institute values a membership reflecting diverse ideas, cultures, populations, and viewpoints within our overall commitment to psychodynamic psychotherapy.

  • Inclusion in our list of member-led therapy groups
  • Advanced training opportunities in psychotherapy and supervision through the Institute’s Post-Graduate Training Program, Supervision Study Program, and Group Therapy Training Program
  • Events open only to members and their guests—Case Conferences, Making Connections colloquia, reading groups, and any other special programs offered through the Membership Committee (which in past years have included “Introduction to the Web,” “Feng Shui and Your Psychotherapy Office,” and “Financial Management for Psychotherapists”)

The Psychotherapy Institute is a member-run organization. As a member, you are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities for involvement, including:

  • Serving on one of our committees, which include Building and Grounds, Case Conference, Clinical Services, Curriculum, Diversity, Education, Group Therapy Training Program, Making Connections, Marketing and Development, Membership, Public Information (which publishes Viewpoint), Supervision Study Program, and Supervisors
  • Teaching courses through our spring and fall educational series (open to nonmembers) and presenting at the Making Connections colloquia or Case Conference series
  • Teaching and/or supervising our clinical trainees

 

Dues
Membership runs from July through June. First-year dues for a new members is $75.00. If you join between January 1 and June 30, dues are $37.50 for the remainder of the current membership year. Annual renewal thereafter is $100.00. There is a discounted rate of $85.00 for therapists who have been licensed fewer than three years. There is also a student rate of $60.00 for interns or unlicensed therapists working clinically half time or students in a pre-licensed, post-graduate program attending school more than half time.
