The Usefulness of Group Thinking and Training
A panel presentation about how group thinking and training can benefit and expand clinical models and practice. Group thinking can be applied to psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families, as well as to supervision, organizational consultation and addiction treatment. Panelist Bios:
Elaine Cooper (Lonergan) PH.D., L.C.S.W is Clinical Professor at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco. She has been awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the graduating psychiatric residents nine times. She has also served on the faculty of Smith College, New York University, New York Medical College, Hunter College, Adelphi University, Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and University of California at Berkeley. She has had 50 years of clinical practice and 30 years of teaching experience in individual, couples and group therapy.
Dr. Cooper received her Master’s in Social Welfare from the University of California, School of Social Welfare at Berkeley in 1964. She received a certificate in Psychoanalytic Group Therapy in 1979 from the Postgraduate Center of Mental Health in New York City. She also received postgraduate training at New York Medical College that included over 250 hours of supervision in psychoanalytically oriented individual, couples and group psychotherapy.
Dr. Cooper is a fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association and has served in a variety of capacities, including Board of Directors, 1988-1991. Currently, she is the Annual Meeting Liaison for the International Journal of Group psychotherapy. She is past President of the Northern Group Psychotherapy Society. She has been a member of the Society of Clinical Social Work since 1975.
Dr. Cooper has coordinated four group programs in major hospitals and developed three group programs at Kaiser Permanente, St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute.
Dr. Cooper is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on group therapy. Her book, Group Intervention: How to Maintain Groups in Medical and Psychiatric Settings had three printings. She is currently in Private Practice in Oakland, California. She leads a Therapy Group for Therapists, a Supervision Group and provides consultation for individuals and agencies.
Dan Wile, Ph.D. received his B.A. from University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, where he is an Assistant Clinical Professor. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has published on psychotherapeutic theory as well as couples therapy, has taught at several graduate programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, gives professional workshops on couples therapy internationally and throughout the United States, and is author of Couples Therapy: A Nontraditional Approach, After the Honeymoon, How Conflict Can Improve Your Relationship, and After the Fight: Using Your Disagreements to Build a Stronger Relationship.
Robert Tyminski, DMH is an adult and child analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. His analytic practice is located in San Francisco. He co-leads, with Dr. Mary Brady, a seminar group for psychotherapists on the treatment of adolescents. He worked as the director of the Oakes Children’s Center for fourteen years, where he supervised a day treatment program and school for children and adolescents with emotional and autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Tyminski is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco. His most recent publications are in the: International Journal of Jungian Studies (2011), "Medea, Jason, and their illusions of the Golden Fleece: a Jungian contribution to transference dreaming," and Jung Journal: Culture & Psyche (2009), "Fleeced: A perspective from antiquity on contemporary addictions." He has also written about group psychotherapy for children with autism spectrum disorders.
Jeannie Little, LCSW is Executive Director of the Harm Reduction Therapy Center, a nonprofit agency providing harm reduction therapy for drug and alcohol users with complicating emotional, social and health problems. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Group Psychotherapist. Since 1994 Ms. Little has developed harm reduction treatment services for multi-diagnosed clients, beginning at Healthcare for Homeless Veterans, then in private practice and at the Harm Reduction Therapy Center. She specializes group treatment of substance use disorders and dual diagnosis. Ms. Little is a trainer in the areas of harm reduction, dual diagnosis, groupwork, housing and homelessness, and working with transition age youth. She provides ongoing consultation and supervision to staff in outpatient clinics, outreach and drop-in centers, case management programs, and housing programs for multi-diagnosed clients. She is the author of several papers on harm reduction groups and dual diagnosis and is co-author of the book Over the Influence: The Harm Reduction Guide for Managing Drugs and Alcohol and of the upcoming second edition of Practicing Harm Reduction Psychotherapy.
