The interplay between idealization and authority and the field created by the supervisor and the supervisee’s relationship to these experiences can shape the course and outcome of clinical supervision. If either member of the supervisory dyad is unable to relinquish his or her need to idealize and/or the need to be idealized, the supervision may be derailed. When supervision is successful, however, there is a reciprocal working through of idealization, which in turn facilitates the development of the supervisee’s clinical authority.

This year’s symposium invites you to participate in a personal exploration of how the supervisor’s vulnerabilities, with regard to being idealized and idealizing, impact the supervisee. Specifically, the discussion will explore how the supervisor can inhibit and/or support the supervisee’s ability to internalize the supervisor’s clinical skills while learning to feel and trust their own clinical authority.

The format of the colloquium offers participants an opportunity to actively examine their personal relationship to idealization and authority. A clinically focused presentation will be followed by small group discussions aimed at exploring personal reactions to the material. The afternoon will feature a live case presentation utilizing a unique method of revealing the supervisor’s and the supervisee’s inner experiences as they occur during the session. The final segment of the symposium will involve small group consultations that will highlight and integrate the discussions of the day.
