Law & Ethics Course:
Affirmative Counseling with Transgender and
Non-Binary Clients as an Ethical Issue

Cultural competence is an ethical principle; however, few therapists have had cultural competence training on working with Transgender and Non-Binary Clients. This training focuses on both the 101’s of working with Transgender and Non-Binary Clients and how to provide ethical, affirming, and trauma-responsive therapy. Taught by a Queer Gender Non-Confirming therapist, this training will review vocabulary, explore how to avoid therapeutic missteps, and review the Minority Stress Framework. The class will allow for the space to ask questions therapists may have been afraid to ask and look at their gender assumptions

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to name three different practice guidelines for working with Transgender and Non-binary Clients.
  • Participants will be able to describe four ways to provide Ethical Affirmative Counseling to Transgender-Non-Binary Clients.
  • Participants will be able to list the current WPATH requirements for letters to clients requesting medical interventions.
  • Participants will be able to name three missteps made by therapists working with Transgender and Non-Binary clients and explain why making them is an ethical issue.
