The Toxic Imagination: Implications of Hegemonic Masculinity in the Therapeutic Relationship

Examining the psychological, religious, economic, social and political paradigms of our time, which perpetuate oppressive gender training, is as urgent today as it has ever been. This is especially relevant in the therapeutic relationship. Rae MountzThe Toxic Imagination is a multidisciplinary approach to uncovering the, often, unconscious forces of American mainstream gender training. With a specific look at toxic masculinity, this course will use a combination of film, queer-feminist-POC literature, clinical vignettes, and group dialogue, to provide the clinician an expanded perspective on how gender identities are forming in relationship to societal structures, and how therapy can support this necessary exploration.

Rae Walker Mountz, LMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Berkeley and San Francisco, where she works primarily with adult cisgender men, multi-heritage couples, immigrants and elders. She received her graduate degree from the University of San Francisco and postgraduate clinical training in psychodynamic theory from The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley, where she currently facilitates white anti-racist study groups on the presence of "whiteness" in oneself, society and the therapeutic relationship. Rae self-identities as a cisgender, “middle” class, hetero-flexible, able-bodied, white woman. When she is not working she is dancing & sharing time with loved ones.
