Exploring Issues of Transference and Countertransference with Transgender Clients: Intersecting Paths

Long-held notions of gender are changing and therapists need to explore how they and their patients are affected by the evolving gender landscape. Everyone has their own gender history filled with innumerable positive and negative experiences received from families, cultural/religious communities, the media, and society. Some come to mind easily, but many are buried deep within, often emerging in confusing, or even potentially harmful countertransference. Invariably, these early gender experiences impact the relationships of clients/patients, and these experiences influence the course of treatment during therapuetic sessions.

This workshop uses a variety of experiential exercises designed to understand more clearly easily accessible memories and unearth more deeply buried ones with explorations of how these memories manifest in the consultation room.  We will also discuss the impact that the therapist's "gate-keeper" role has on clients' perceptions of therapy.
