Study Group: James Bugental and Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy: Theory and Practice

At TPI 2232 Carleton St., Berkeley, CA, Center Room

Facilitated By: Joan Monheit, LCSW

Together we will view a DVD of master psychotherapist James F.T. Bugental, PhD discussing the key concepts of Existential-Humanistic Psychotherapy as well as conducting a "therapy" session, pausing for questions and comments as we watch. Focus will be on the concepts and practice of existential psychotherapy (particularly presence and authenticity) and how one might integrate them into a depth or psychodynamic approach.

James F.T. Bugental, PhD was a leading psychotherapist and respected teacher. He was the creator, along with Rollo May, of existential-humanistic psychotherapy. Jim valued and promoted “experience-near psychotherapy,” recognizing inward sensing and spontaneous engagement in the present moment as core practices for depth therapy. His many books include The Search For Authenticity, Psychotherapy And Process and The Art Of The Psychotherapist.

Joan Monheit, LCSW works with individuals, couples and groups providing depth psychotherapy from an existential-relational perspective, integrating her poet's sensibility with a social justice focus. She trained extensively with James Bugental and continues to be an active member of the Art Of The Psychotherapist Master Group which contemplates the integration of diverse clinical and theoretical perspectives with the continued study of humanistic-existential psychotherapy.
